Individual Learning Plan (ILP)

What is an ILP??

An individualized learning plan (ILP) is both a document and a process that students use – with support from school counselors, teachers, and parents – to define their career goals and post-secondary plans in order to inform the student’s decisions about their courses and activities throughout high school.

The ILP has many features and resources:

  • Exploring careers beginning in the 6th grade
  • Finding careers that match their skills and interests
  • Creating education plans
  • Establishing personal goals and revisiting these as they progress through school
  • Creating, maintaining and changing resumes
  • Tracking and reflecting on their community services experiences, work experiences, career-planning activities, and extra-curricular and organization activities
  • Exploring colleges and post-secondary opportunities that match their career, post-secondary and life goals
  • Connecting to the KHEAA.org (Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority) Web site for help with college planning, tuition assistance information and applications
Who is required to complete an ILP?

The Individual Learning Plans or ILPs are changing how students prepare themselves for their future.  All Kentucky public school students are required to create and/or update their ILP each year of high school.

When will students have time to work on ILPs?
English teachers will be guiding MCHS students through the process.  Ms. Newsome is the ILP program coordinator and will answer question and address concerns.  She will also monitor student progress and ensure students complete all ILP requirements.

Can parents access their childs ILP?
Parents are encouraged to participate in the creation of their child's ILP.  Students can access their ILP from any computer and share the document with parents.

The ILP Playbook
The ILP Playbook is designed to be a useful tool to assist students in creating meaningful ILPs and learning experiences.  Students will have access to an ILP Playbook while working on ILPs in their English classes.

For more information, please contact Ms. Casaundra Newsome by email at casaundra.newsome@marshall.kyschools.us.

HOBY'S MISSION
For more than five decades, the Hugh O'Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership Seminar has inspired young people to make a difference and become catalysts for positive change in their home, school, workplace, and community. As America’s foremost youth leadership organization, HOBY has a long history of successfully motivating young people to develop into outstanding leaders.

CORE LEADERSHIP SKILLS
Much of the work at HOBY involves young people exploring and identifying their unique leadership skills. Every student is different, and there is no attempt to impart a predefined set of attributes onto HOBY participants. We stress self-knowledge, uniqueness, and authenticity, not conformity. Students learn to mobilize their own unique traits and are exposed to particular leadership principles that they can explore and incorporate in a fashion that is true to their own personality.

Death By Chocolate

The student chapter of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) at the University of Kentucky, Paducah Campus is excited to invite you to their  6th annual Death by Chocolate event on October 24th from 6:00-7:30 PM.  All high school students, parents, and educators are welcome.

Death By Chocolate is hosted by SWE with the goal of informing young women about their potential for a STEM career.  They want young girls to know that engineering is not just for men, but that women excel in engineering and other STEM majors.

At this event, they celebrate women in STEM by starting off with a deluxe chocolate buffet! This buffet is full of chocolate and non-chocolate dessert items with options for as many dietary restrictions as we can make. Their club members will speak to students in an open dining setting while everyone eats their dessert.  Then, you will head to the auditorium to hear our keynote speaker, Alex Carr, give a presentation on her journey as a woman in the engineering field. A student panel will be open for questions after our keynote presentation.

If you have questions, please feel free to contact the SWE President, Olivia Parker Hawthorne.

Does this sound like you?

The 2020 Summer Program Application opens October 4th, 2019!

For three weeks every summer, over 200 of Kentucky’s most talented and creative high school students are invited to grow and learn together at the Governor’s School for the Arts’ college summer residence program.  Rising juniors and seniors in high school are offered in-depth instruction in one of nine artistic disciplines: architecture + design, creative writing, dance, drama, instrumental music, musical theatre, new media, visual art, and vocal music.

The honor of experiencing GSA includes:
  • Attending the program for FREE (all students receive full tuition, room and board).
  • Opportunities to learn in a supportive community of distinguished master-teachers.
  • College preparation, career counseling, and the chance to meet college representatives during an exclusive GSA college fair.
  • Arts-related community service opportunities.
  • The excitement of performing/exhibiting at the Student Festival at the conclusion of the program.
  • Serious fun!

Students are immersed in a rigorous schedule of daily seminars, master classes, lectures, hands-on workshops and field trips. While each student specializes in one art form, all students participate in structured, interdisciplinary arts experiences designed to familiarize them with the joys and challenges of specialties other than their own.  Upon completion of the summer program, students become part of the ever-growing GSA alumni network, gaining a variety of opportunities such as scholarships and funding through the Toyota Alumni Fund.
