PSAT Information

Students registered to take the PSAT exam will do so on October 16 during first and second blocks.  

Students must complete a pre-administration session prior to test day. That session will be Tuesday, October 1 at 10:15 in the PAC. We will announce for students to report to the PAC via the intercom if possible.

Essay Topic and Guidelines
Write an original and creative essay that demonstrates an understanding of political courage as described by John F. Kennedy in Profiles in Courage.

  • Describe and analyze an act of political courage by a US elected official who served during or after 1917, the year of JFK's birth.,  The essay may focus on an issue at the local, state, national, or international level.
  • Use at least five varied, reliable sources such as books, articles, and personal interviews.  Participants are encouraged to use primary source material such as letters, speeches, and government documents.
  • Essays must be a minimum of 700 words but no more than 1,000 words.
  • John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, and Edward M. Kennedy are not eligible subjects for essays.

Awards
  • First place: $10,000
  • Second place: $3,000
  • Five finalists: $1,000 each
  • Eight semifinalists: $100 each

More College Informational Sessions

Sophomores enrolled in AP or Pre-Calculus classes for the 19-20 school year may sign up with Mrs. Jackson to meet with representatives from the following colleges.

   * October 1 - Brescia University
   * October 15 - Eastern Kentucky University
   * October 16 - Western Kentucky University
   * October 21 - University of Kentucky
   * October 23 - Southern Illinois College
   * October 30 - University of Louisville

When you have signed up, Mrs. Jackson will bring you a ticket the morning of the event to serve as a pass to leave class.

ACT Prep Session for October Test


Score Higher is now accepting enrollment in their next five-week session to prepare for the October ACT.  Classes will begin on Sunday, September 22 and will continue to meet on Sunday afternoons from 1:00 - 4:00 at the Challenger Learning Center, which is located on the campus of WKCTC.

Commissioner's Student Council

Image result for kentucky department of education logoStudents in grades 10-12 may apply to join the Commissioner’s Student Council, a student panel that meets with the Commissioner of Education and the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) staff.  The council provides input on issues concerning education in Kentucky and works with the KDE staff to develop ideas that will work to improve and transform education.
The Commissioner’s Student Council is a year-long program for Kentucky public school students, including students from Kentucky School for the Blind and Kentucky School for the Deaf.  Students will meet three or four times during the 2019-2020 school year.
The council seeks students with refreshing ideas and thoughtful insight into how schools and student achievement can further improve.  All students are encouraged to apply in order to represent the diverse academic, geographic, demographic and school-size variables particular to Kentucky.

Prudential Spirit of Community Awards

Applications are now open for 2020 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, honoring students in grades 5-12 for making meaningful contributions to their communities through volunteer service. 

Students who volunteered over the past year and want to apply for a 2020 award or if you just want more information, go to visit spirit.prudential.com or nassp.org/spirit.

The student application deadline is November 5, 2019. All applications must be submitted to the school principal, Patricia Greer, or head of a Girl Scout council, county 4-H organization, American Red Cross chapter, YMCA or Points of Light Global Network member.
