Message from Mark Kennedy: Attached is the November news release that I have sent to all of the newspapers in West Kentucky.
This is an excellent opportunity for the students at your high school to compete in a speech contest that promotes a better understanding of our U. S. Constitution and the obligations of citizens to our government. It also affords them the opportunity to earn significant scholarships for their efforts. This program could also afford your students to get additional credit towards their civics and history classes.
I am reaching out to you because the First District of the American Legion includes your school and we have very rich tradition of excelling in this contest. During the last four years this district has produced three Department (State) Champions and four years ago we had a National Champion (Carlissa Frederich of McCracken County High School) and last year we had a student finish third in the nation (Jackson Boone of Marshall County HS). Each of those students collected nearly $39,000.00 in scholarship funds that they were able to use for any purpose.
Thus far this year we only have one contestant registered for the contest, but I am sure there are more kids in this district that would compete if they were aware of the program and they would represent your school and our district as well, if not better, than the students that have gone before them. Registration is easy: students can register by sending their name, phone number, date of birth, high school, grade in school and their address. I will provide them any additional information they need, answer any questions they may have and encourage them as much as I can to succeed.
Please encourage any students you may have that might be interested to contact me at usmc1965@bellsouth.net or by phone at 270-752-3333.
Thanks for helping get the word out. We have another champion in our midst and we can find her or him.
Mrs. Burnham has visited all fall and full-year AP classes this week to discuss the upcoming AP exam registration for fall and full year courses. Registration for those AP exams will begin Friday, October 14 and run through Friday, November 4.
There will be a separate registration for Spring AP courses.
If you have any questions please contact Mrs. Burnham at 270-527-1453 or jennifer.burnham@marshall.kyschools.us.
This is the handout given out in the informational session:
Do you have a freshman of sophomore who is interested in applying to The Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science? We have a Gatton Academy representative who will be here on Thursday, September 22 at 5:30 in the MCHS cafeteria.
The PSAT exam will be given on Tuesday, October 25 from 8:00 – 11:30 a.m., at Marshall County High School. The PSAT is only given one time a year. As juniors, students take it to practice for the SAT, to enter the competition for scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation or for merit based scholarships offered by their parent’s employer (if applicable). Students take the PSAT as 10th graders to practice and can also qualify for national recognition programs.
National Merit Scholarship Corporation: This scholarship competition awards approximately 8,200 scholarships annually. The selection process starts with the choosing of National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalists and Commended Scholars. Cutoffs vary from state to state but typically Semi-Finalists score in the top one percent of students in their state and Commended Scholars between the top one to four percent. Most of the approximately 16,000 Semi-Finalists become Finalists, and half of those ultimately receive National Merit Scholarships.
The cost of the PSAT is $20 and is available to current students at MCHS.
The PSAT is available to current students at MCHS. The cost of the PSAT is $20. Students may register with Mrs. Jackson before school, during lunch, and after school. The deadline for registering is Tuesday, September 13 at 3:30. Payment must be made at the time of registration in the form of cash or check (made payable to MCHS).
Please contact Jennifer Jackson in Room 1603 for more information.

All student drivers are required to have a parking pass to park in our student parking lots. The passes are free and available for pickup during lunches this week. Proof of insurance and a driver’s license are required.
Sophomores will be participating in the Kentucky Summative Assessment (KSA) on Tuesday, April 26. This state assessment was formerly called K-PREP in elementary and middle school.
Sophomores will be taking assessments for Reading and Math. Testing will take place during the first two blocks with the rest of the day's schedule being normal.
Teachers will be working with students this week on making sure they understand the format of the test since it will be online. If you would like to go over it some more, please click on this link to get to the Kentucky Testing Portal.
It is extremely important that students bring their school-issued Chromebook (fully-charged) with them to school on Tuesday. The testing program is already installed on the school device and cannot be placed on a personal one.
Feel free to contact Jennifer Jackson if you have any questions.

This message only applies to you if you currently have a student taking an AP (CollegeBoard Advanced Placement) class this semester.
Ms. Burnham visited all spring classes earlier this month to discuss the upcoming AP exam registration for spring courses. These courses include: AP Psychology, AP English Literature, AP Macroeconomics, AP Government, AP English Language, and AP Calculus.
Registration began on 2/16 for spring semester AP courses. The deadline is March 8. Students wanting to mail in a check to Total Registration rather than pay online need to do that ASAP to ensure payment is received and processed by the deadline.
Students are not required to take the AP exam. Students wanting to take the AP exam must follow the two step directions in the handout.
